German Chocolate

German chocolate cake, we are sorry to report, is not actually a German tradition or a German invention at all. The name for German chocolate cake actually comes from the name of a man who developed some cooking chocolate for the Baker company and hence the name we all are familiar with, Baker's German Chocolate. Most people are surprised to find out that the cake they have enjoyed all their life is not really from Germany, but a very American invention! At least you can still enjoy the real deal from Germany with a box of German chocolates!

A new twist on German chocolate cake
Here at Monkey Chocolate, we are crazy about German chocolate cake and being a Monkey makes the dessert sound even better with a touch of, what else, bananas! If something is good, well then it will be even better with some bananas thrown in for good measure. Here's a great recipe for just that- Banana German chocolate cake:

You will need to get a hold of the following ingredients:

 Cake:

1 package German chocolate cake mix
1 cup of ripe, sliced bananas
 3 eggs
 1 cup water
 1/3 cup oil

 Frosting:

1 container of frosting (ready made) flavored coconut, almond, or pecan
 1/4 cup mashed bananas

 Glaze:

 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, melted
 1 1/2 teaspoons water
 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Grease and flour a 9x13" pan.

Combine cake mix, bananas, water, oil, and eggs in a large bowl.

Beat together at low speed until everything is moist, then beat at high speed for 2 minutes.

Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 30-40 minutes. Cool completely.

Combine the frosting and bananas in a small bowl and spread over the cake.

In another small bowl combine the melted chocolate and powdered sugar, add water until desired consistency.

Drizzle over the frosting.

That is all there is to it! Now in addition to the German chocolates you are munching on, you can have a slice of homemade cake. There is nothing more sublime than all things chocolate, whether they are made from the finest European chocolate or some obscure Dutch chocolate- it is all worth a try. Try some of the confections from the other countries, just because it is not Belgian chocolate doesn't mean it won't be good!

Read on in our site for the very best German chocolate pie recipe. It is simple and fast dessert that does not even need to be baked in the oven. From start to finish you will not spend more than 20 minutes preparing a great dessert, one that rivals even this German chocolate cake!
