German Chocolate Cake
The very American German chocolate cake
Many of us grew up with German chocolate that was expertly made by one of the women in the family and was always at the table for the holidays and special occasions. On account of the name, many of us believed that the cake came all the way from the German motherland. In fact, there was a common rumor that the German chocolate cake actually came to this country from immigrants that came over at the turn of the century. But, this is only a story, the misnomer cake is actually an american invention.
It was a man by the name of Sam German came up with this type of dark chocolate just for baking. He made it for the Baker company and so it was initially named Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate. Later on, through use, some of the title was dropped and it was called simply german chocolate. The cake then became famous after a recipe by the same name was published in a Texas newspaper. The recipe took off and quickly filled the ovens of housewives in 1957 America.
There are all different takes on the original recipe, but the thing that really sets it apart from a regular chocolate cake is the coconut and pecan frosting that is used on the outside and also as a filling.
So now that you know that German chocolate cake is not really from Germany at all - don't think for one second that that great country doesn't have a taste for good sweets. In the big world of European chocolate there is a lot of competition as there are a few countries that can boast about their chocolates, but even though we don't hear all that much about them German chocolates are also some of the bets and worth try.
